Murder Investigation in Ukraine Linked to Monaco Assassination Attempt: GRU Officer and Former Policeman Detained
Ukrainian law enforcement agencies have revealed details surrounding the murder of Anastasiia Berezovska, which is directly linked to the investigation into an assassination attempt against the family of Ukrainian businessman Vadym Ermolaiev in Monaco. According to information from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the case involves the involvement of an active officer of the Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
The investigation shows that Berezovska, who was suspected of attempting an attack against Ermolaiev's family in Monaco (in which three people were injured, including a child), arrived in Ukraine in July. Since her return, she had maintained financial contacts with a former law enforcement official and an active GRU officer through bank transfers and cryptocurrencies.
During investigative actions, the active GRU officer confessed to the murder of Berezovska, claiming that he acted independently and did not inform his leadership about his contacts with her or the financial transactions. During a search of the former police officer's home, a room resembling a torture chamber was discovered.
What does this mean for public safety?
This incident highlights the risks of the intertwining of private business interests, criminal elements, and state service employees in conflict conditions. The case demonstrates how cross-border investigations are becoming increasingly complex when intelligence personnel and financial flows through cryptocurrencies are involved, requiring close coordination between international law enforcement agencies.
Currently, Ukrainian authorities are working to identify the masterminds behind the crime and have already handed over the available information to the investigating authorities in Monaco.
