The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) is taking a decisive step in regulating tournament participation by introducing mandatory genetic testing for all female competitors. The new policy, which comes into effect on July 21, aims to ensure the biological identity of the participants.

According to the new regulations, every female tennis player will be required to undergo a one-time test via a blood, saliva, or cheek swab sample. The primary goal of the test is to check for the presence of the SRY gene, which is located on the Y chromosome and is associated with the development of male sexual characteristics.

Previous WTA rules allowed the participation of transgender athletes, provided they had declared a female identity and maintained low testosterone levels for at least two years. The new approach replaces these criteria with direct genetic confirmation. Only a negative result will grant the right to participate in tournaments under the association's auspices.

In the event of a positive result, additional medical examinations will be conducted. Refusal to undergo testing or failure to meet the criteria may lead to serious disciplinary measures, including fines, temporary suspension, annulment of achieved results, and full exclusion from competitions.

The topic has already sparked reactions within tennis circles. Aryna Sabalenka, a leader in the world rankings, expressed her opinion that competing against biological males is not fair for women. The WTA emphasized that despite the sensitivity of the issue, the new policy will be implemented with respect to all athletes.
