Five mountaineers from Bosnia and Herzegovina died on Mount Elbrus in Russia

Five mountaineers from Bosnia and Herzegovina died while climbing Mount Elbrus in Russia after the group was caught in a powerful storm. Severe weather conditions continue to complicate rescue operations on site.

Details of the incident and survivors

According to information from the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, rescue teams have managed to find and evacuate two surviving mountaineers. They have been transported for medical assistance. Subsequently, the bodies of two of the deceased were found at an altitude of approximately 5,350 meters.

The regional division of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation reported that the bodies of three more mountaineers were also found. Due to the ongoing storm, the bodies of three of the victims still cannot be evacuated from the mountain, according to Russian state media.

Identities of the victims and context

Although official Russian authorities have not specified the nationality of the victims, local law enforcement confirmed to RIA Novosti that all those who died are citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina. According to Bosnian media, the expedition consisted of seven people from the city of Zenica, including a married couple and a doctor from the local hospital.

Mount Elbrus, located in the North Caucasus at an altitude of 5,642 meters, is the highest peak in Europe. The mountain is known for sudden changes in weather conditions, which often create dangerous situations for mountaineers.
