Cypriot Cinema Triumphs on the International Stage: Successes in Karlovy Vary and Asia

Cypriot film productions are marking significant success on the international scene, winning important distinctions at prestigious festivals in Europe and Asia. According to data from the Cypriot agency CNA, these successes span various genres and regions, solidifying the country's position in the contemporary film industry.

One of the most significant achievements at the 60th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is the Ecumenical Jury award for the film "The Lion at My Back," directed by Tonya Mishiali. The drama, which follows the unexpected connection between a Cypriot and a teenage girl from Senegal, is a product of a Cypriot company with the participation of co-producers from Luxembourg and Greece.

At the same Karlovy Vary festival, Greek-German director Efthimis Kosemund-Sanidis also stood out, winning the "Proxima" award for Best Director with the film "A Whole Person Almost." It is important to note that this project is a co-production with active participation from Bulgaria, Germany, Cyprus, Romania, and Greece.

The success of Cypriot cinema also extends to the Asian continent. The film "Hold Onto Me" by Myrsini Aristidou, which has already been awarded at the Sundance festival, won recognition in Shanghai, where lead actress Maria Petrova received an acting award.

Another major triumph is the film "Maricel" by Elias Demetriou. At the Southeast Asian Academy International Film Festival in the Philippines, the film dominated with awards for Best Feature Film, Director, Producer, and Cinematography. "Maricel" already boasts a rich history of international distinctions, including in Manchester, Tokyo, and Osaka, with its next stop being Germany in August.
