In June, Bulgaria experienced one of its most significant periods of deflation in the last 15 years. According to data from the National Statistical Institute (NSI), the monthly consumer price index fell by 0.9%, which is comparable to the deep declines observed in 2015.

The main driver of this decrease is the sharp drop in fuel prices and the seasonal reduction in the prices of certain food products. The decline in the "Transport" category reached 3.3%, with the largest correction seen in propane-butane (-14.1%) and diesel (-9.4%). In the food sector, the decline was 1.9%, with a significant decrease in the price of seasonal vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers.

Despite the positive trend, economists from the Institute for Political Research (IPR) emphasize that this is not a sign of permanent inflation control. The reason lies in the unstable energy market – following the temporary easing of tensions between the USA and Iran, Brent crude oil prices began a rapid upward trajectory, being over 15% higher by mid-July compared to the end of June.

In addition to energy risks, consumers are facing new expenses. The Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (EWRC) has already announced an increase in electricity prices of 3.05% for household consumers, while heating and hot water prices will jump by nearly 4.6%.

In conclusion, although June brought short-term relief to household budgets, pressure on service prices (restaurants, hotels, medical services) and the potential increase in transport and energy costs make the forecasts for August uncertain. For permanent inflation control, a decrease in a wider range of goods is necessary, which currently seems uncertain due to the geopolitical situation.
