UN calls on tech giants to transition to renewable energy for AI needs
During the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, UN Secretary-General António Guterres issued a direct call to the leading technology companies in the sector. He insisted on a transition to the use of renewable energy sources to power AI systems by 2030.
According to Guterres, it is critical for companies to become more transparent and disclose their full environmental footprint. He emphasized that the rapid growth of technology leads to increasing needs for vast amounts of energy, water, and land—topics that must be subject to open public debate.
At the same time, the UN leader also pointed to the positive side of technology. He noted that artificial intelligence itself can be a powerful tool for accelerating the energy transition. By optimizing electrical grids, enabling more efficient integration of green energy, and reducing resource consumption, AI can contribute to the sustainable development of the planet.
Guterres' call is aimed at taking corporate responsibility, emphasizing that the future of ecological stability depends on how the resources of the fastest-growing industries are managed today.
