German software giant Helsing launches secret production of AI drones for Ukraine
The German technology company Helsing, specializing in the development of military artificial intelligence (AI), has launched serial production of assault drones for the Ukrainian armed forces. Production is taking place at a strictly secret facility in Southern Germany, the location of which is non-public due to national security considerations.
According to data provided by the New York Times, deliveries of the HX-2 model to Ukraine began in late 2024. The drones have already undergone real combat testing, achieving approximately a 70% success rate in completed tasks. The main advantage of the system is its ability to function autonomously: thanks to the AI software, the drones continue their mission even when GPS navigation and radio communications are blocked by electronic warfare systems.
Economic Model: Mass Production vs. Expensive Equipment
Helsing is betting on a strategy of cheap, mass-produced autonomous systems to replace or complement traditional heavy weaponry. The price of a single attack drone is approximately 17,500 euros, which is negligible compared to the hundreds of millions of dollars required to launch a modern fighter jet or tank.
The production complex has about 100 employees, mostly with experience from the German automotive sector. Enhanced security includes strict personnel checks and the possibility of complete dismantling and relocation of the facility in less than 24 hours in the event of an escalated threat.
Future Developments
In addition to the drones, the company is working on the CA-1 Europa unmanned combat aircraft project. It is expected to enter operation by 2029 as a cheaper and safer alternative to piloted aircraft for high-risk missions.
