Border Blockade with Greece: 'Ivaylovgrad – Kiprinos' Crossing Closed Due to Farmers' Protest
The 'Ivaylovgrad – Kiprinos' border crossing on the border with Greece is blocked by protesting agricultural producers. The situation has rendered the point impassable for traffic after farmers decided to express their dissatisfaction with existing transport restrictions.
The main reason for the protest is the ban on trucks with a gross weight exceeding 3.5 tons passing through the former border crossing. According to the protesters, this restriction forces them to transport their produce to Bulgarian markets 60 km away, instead of selling it near the border—in a Greek village located just 2 km away, where they expect more favorable prices.
This is the second similar protest in the region in the last week. The 'Road Infrastructure' Agency emphasizes that, according to the agreement with the Greek side, this specific crossing is intended solely for light vehicles. Nevertheless, it is noted that exceptions for heavier vehicles are sometimes permitted.
