Crisis at Yambol Regional Hospital: Pediatrics on the Verge of Closure
The regional hospital in Yambol is facing a serious staffing crisis that could lead to the complete cessation of activities in the children's department. The main problem is a critical shortage of pediatricians, BNR reports.
According to the director of the medical facility, Dr. Panayot Dimanov, the trend is alarming – fewer and fewer young specialists are choosing pediatrics as a career path. At the same time, experienced doctors are reaching retirement age or leaving established institutions.
“They prefer pre-hospital care, where there are no shifts, no unavailability, and no severe cases,” explains Dr. Dimanov. He emphasizes that the lack of adequate working conditions and infrastructural problems are key factors driving young doctors to seek work in larger cities.
The problem is further complicated by the fact that the construction of the new hospital building in Yambol has been ongoing for nearly half a century, which further worsens the working environment.
If the situation does not stabilize and new specialists are not attracted, patients in the Yambol region will be left without local pediatric care. In such a case, children with severe clinical cases will have to be transported to hospitals in neighboring regions, which creates serious risks to their health and safety.
