Wage Freezes and Market Contraction: Business in Bulgaria Prepares for Economic Crisis
Bulgarian business is entering a period of increased caution and economic uncertainty. After a long period of stable growth, the labor market is beginning to show signs of stagnation, characterized by wage freezes and increased difficulty in finding new employment.
According to Silvia Pavlova, co-founder and managing director of Wooden Spoon, in an interview with Bloomberg TV Bulgaria, companies are currently under double pressure: on one hand, due to lower consumer spending, and on the other, due to rising operating costs. This is leading to a shift in employer strategies, which are focusing on retaining key staff but seeking to limit the expansion of their teams.
One of the most noticeable changes is in the IT sector, which until recently was a primary driver of high salaries. Now, a trend toward layoffs and lower flexibility in offered terms is being observed. Pavlova notes that even highly experienced specialists, who until now have received annual indexation, are now facing difficulties as the market shrinks.
The expert predicts serious challenges for the economy over the next year, warning of a potential crisis. The main problem is that industries that previously fueled the economy through high employee incomes are no longer generating the same flow of funds.
In conditions of economic uncertainty, consumers are becoming increasingly cautious. This is particularly visible in sectors such as cosmetics, where people avoid experimenting with new brands and stick to safe, established products. According to Pavlova, companies that do not have a built-in crisis management strategy and do not monitor the dynamically changing environment will be the most severely affected.
