Ruse to transform Ministry of Defense property into an archaeological park

The Municipality of Ruse will acquire for free a property that is no longer needed for the requirements of the Ministry of Defense. The decision to transfer ownership was voted on at a meeting of the Municipal Council, emphasizing that the territory has enormous potential for cultural and historical development.

The site consists of over 5 decares with three buildings, located near the Military Club. Due to its strategic location adjacent to the ancient fortress 'Sexaginta Prista', authorities propose that the site be converted into a specialized archaeological park. Important excavations have already been conducted on the territory, revealing sites from the Roman era, including the principia (Roman army headquarters) – a unique site located directly within an urban environment.

Professor Nenov, who supports the initiative, points out that a temple of Apollo, as well as a U-shaped tower and a gate to the Roman headquarters, have also been discovered on the property. According to him, converting the property into a park will allow for better management of cultural heritage and conservation of the discovered artifacts, instead of its current state as an abandoned and unmaintained territory.

The municipal administration emphasized that the acquisition is also driven by the need to restore order in the area, which is currently turned into an unregulated zone. Following the official acquisition, joint work with the Regional Historical Museum and the Ministry of Culture is expected to conduct new excavations and beautify the space.
