Historic Success for Bulgaria: Ioan Velichkov Wins Two Medals at the European Table Tennis Championships

Bulgarian table tennis has made a triumphant return to the European stage. 18-year-old national athlete Ioan Velichkov became the main star of the European U19 Championships held in Gondomar, Portugal.

Velichkov returned with two awards: a silver medal in the doubles discipline and a bronze in the individual competition. With these achievements, he records the strongest performance by a Bulgarian youth competitor since 1990.

In the doubles competition, the Bulgarian partnered with Austrian Julian Ržihauschek. After a series of convincing matches, including a victory over the Italian duo in the semifinals, the tandem reached the final. There, they conceded 1:3 games to the French pair Nathan Lam and Antoine Noaro, winning the silver medals.

Velichkov's individual performance was equally impressive. After a series of victories, he fought his way to the semifinal stage, where he faced Frenchman Nathan Pilar. Despite a 1:4 game defeat, the Bulgarian secured the bronze medal, which is the highest ranking for a Bulgarian youth in singles in the last 36 years.

The last similar success for Bulgaria in this category was achieved in 1990 by Konstantin Lengerov. Velichkov's achievements in Gondomar confirm his rising form, adding to his credentials which already include WTT Youth Contender tournament titles and the Bulgarian national men's title.
