Change in ball replacement rules: ATP tests new system

Tennis is on the brink of a technical change that could alter the dynamics of high-level matches. Following a wave of criticism from leading tennis players regarding the quality and behavior of balls in play, the ATP Tour is beginning to implement new standards and rules.

The main problem pointed out by stars such as Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, and Taylor Fritz is the unpredictability of the balls. As the number of shots increases, the felt coating becomes fuzzy, making the balls slower and with a lower bounce. This forces players to constantly adapt their tactics and even their racket string settings.

Currently, the standard provides for ball replacement after seven games, and then every nine games thereafter. The new trial, which will be tested at a Challenger series tournament next month, proposes more frequent rotation: an initial change after five games and subsequent replacements every seven games.

The ATP's goal is to achieve full centralization of ball distribution by 2029, so that every tournament series on the same surface in a single region uses an identical model. Although tour data shows that rally length remains stable, tennis players insist on greater consistency to avoid the artificial slowing of the game with worn-out balls.

If the experiment is successful, it will require a larger number of consumables from organizers, but promises a fairer and more predictable environment for the competitors.
