The US is seeking to reach an agreement with Iran regarding the free passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz by August 5. According to the US Treasury Department, this would lead to the stabilization of energy markets on a global scale.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated in an interview with CNN that Washington is conducting negotiations with the Iranian side. He expressed optimism that there is a chance to reach an agreement in the very near future, which would allow for a "more normalized situation" in the conflict region.

When asked whether the agreement would allow Iran to collect fees from passing ships, Bessent replied that he expects "freedom of movement" to be maintained. Similar optimistic forecasts were shared by President Donald Trump on August 3, after he withdrew threats of a large-scale military strike against Iran.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarified that Washington is participating in negotiations being held between Oman and Iran. The goal of these talks is to increase shipping through the strategic waterway. Rubio confirmed that progress has been made, but there is still no final solution.

The Strait of Hormuz is critical to the global economy, as approximately 20% of the world's oil supplies pass through it.
