Traveling to Greece with Pets: What are the Rules for Ferries and Buses

With the onset of the summer season, the number of tourists choosing to spend their vacation in Greece together with their pets is increasing. To avoid inconveniences during your trip, it is important to know the specific rules established by the Greek authorities.

Ferry Transport: Documents and Registration

When traveling by ferry, the pet must be declared at the moment of ticket purchase. A free ticket is issued for the animal, which is registered in the respective company's system before boarding.

Required Documents: The owner must have a health booklet or the animal's passport, documentation of a microchip, and proof of mandatory vaccinations (including rabies). One passenger is entitled to transport up to five pets.

Important Exception: For lines connecting the mainland with the islands in the Saronic Gulf (Aegina, Agistri, Poros, Metana, Hydra, and Spetses), health booklets are not required, and it is not necessary to issue a special ticket for the animal.

Onboard Rules:

• Animals over 10 kg: May only stay on open decks, in specially designated crates, or in pet cabins (if the ship provides them).
• Animals up to 10 kg: May also be located indoors, but only in a transport crate or bag.

Note: It is strictly forbidden to leave animals in ship garages due to the risk of high temperatures and insufficient ventilation.

Traveling by Bus

For bus transport, primarily small pets are allowed for transport, and they must be in a closed crate or bag. Exceptions are service dogs and guide dogs, which can travel without a crate next to their owner.

The owner is obliged to carry the animal's health booklet or passport and to ensure that it does not cause discomfort to other passengers. Since carriers on international and intercity lines may have their own additional requirements, it is highly recommended to check in advance.

Failure to comply with these rules may lead to refusal of transport or even administrative sanctions according to Greek legislation.
