Need for institutional support for tourism

Bulgaria is not fully utilizing its potential to promote the Rhodopes, President Iliana Yotova stated. She made this remark to journalists in Zlatograd following a visit to the Ethnographic Area Complex.

According to the President, it is necessary for institutions to take greater responsibility for popularizing the region among both Bulgarian citizens and foreign tourists.

Proposal for cultural routes

Iliana Yotova proposed the creation of specialized cultural and tourist routes to connect the historical sites in the region. She suggested an exemplary trajectory starting from Kardzhali, passing through Perperikon and including Thracian tombs and unique imagery, and ending in Zlatograd, which she described as a "mecca of the Bulgarian National Revival."

"Children, in particular, have much to learn about this exceptionally ancient history, of which we are the heirs," the President emphasized.

Zlatograd as an open-air museum

During a tour of the Old Town, accompanied by archaeologist Prof. Nikolay Ovcharov, the President noted the unique atmosphere of the place. She described Zlatograd as a kind of open-air museum that successfully preserves the Revival spirit and Bulgarian traditions.

The visit to Zlatograd is part of a broader tour of the Rhodopes, during which the President has already visited Gela and Perperikon.
