The Bulgarian polar program has reported significant success and international recognition over the last 30 years. According to information presented by Rositsa Yaneva, Head of the Science Directorate at the National Center for Polar Research, over 450 scientists have worked at the Bulgarian base on Livingston Island, with a significant portion being international researchers.

From the first expedition in 1988 to the present day, Bulgaria has built a stable presence in Antarctica. Since 1993, the country has maintained a permanent base that operates during the polar months (from November to March). The development of infrastructure is a key factor in this success – thanks to funding from the national roadmap for scientific infrastructure, the base now features three specialized laboratories: biological, geological, and a general laboratory.

An important factor in expanding the scientific scope is the use of a research vessel. It allows access to previously inaccessible locations and facilitates the transportation of samples, which has increased the interest of foreign colleagues in the Bulgarian base. During the latest expedition, Bulgaria supported researchers from Romania, Greece, and Montenegro.

Preparations for the 35th Bulgarian polar expedition are currently underway. The national program "From Pole to Pole" not only supports multidisciplinary research but also actively invests in the future of science through competitions for young scientists. These projects support the analyses and publications of young researchers with annual budgets of up to 15,000 euros, while larger scientific projects can reach up to 50,000 euros.

The next phase of the program will provide funding for three-year scientific projects, which will ensure even deeper and more consistent work in the polar environment.
