Bulgarian Students Achieve Massive Success at the International Physics Olympiad in Colombia
Bulgarian young scientists have once again proven their excellence on the world stage. The national physics team achieved an exceptional result at the 56th International Physics Olympiad held in Colombia, returning with a total of five medals – four silver and one bronze.
According to the team leader, Prof. Miroslav Abrashev from the Faculty of Physics at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski", this success is the result of long-standing traditions and systematic preparation. One of the key factors for the achieved result is the fact that three of the silver medalists are only in the 10th grade, which suggests the long-term potential of these talents.
An important aspect of the success is also the decentralization of scientific talent in the country. Representatives of the Bulgarian team come from five different schools in the cities of Varna, Burgas, Sofia, and Gotse Delchev. This demonstrates that the preparation of future scientists is no longer concentrated only in the capital, but is also spreading to regional centers.
Prof. Abrashev emphasizes that modern olympiads require not only brilliant intellect but also specific qualities – mental resilience, speed, and the ability to work with increasingly complex and time-consuming tasks. The preparation process includes strict selection through three rounds of the national olympiad and intensive two-week courses at Sofia University.
In the context of Bulgarian scientific history, the professor recalls the legendary successes of Katerina Naidenova and Aleksandar Prodanov, who are part of the world's "Hall of Fame" of physicists. While Naidenova develops her career in international institutions such as the "Max Planck" in Germany, Prodanov chose to develop his academic path in Bulgaria, at Sofia University.
