The 'Asado' Ritual: How Traditional BBQ Unites the Argentina National Team
The Argentina national team turns the traditional barbecue, known as 'asado', into a key tool for psychological preparation and team cohesion. While the world watches their preparation for upcoming major competitions, the 'Albiceleste' continues to maintain its cultural roots, regardless of the location.
The ritual involves the joint preparation of meat by the players, the coaching staff, and federation officials. The tradition turned into a large-scale operation even during the triumph in Qatar, when over 2.5 tons of meat were consumed. Similar events are part of the team's daily routine, with many such gatherings organized at the training base in New Jersey.
Despite the strict dietary regimes that professional athletes are subject to, head coach Lionel Scaloni supports the practice. According to him, these moments are of immense importance for the group's emotional state. "Sometimes we even shorten training sessions to grill meat together. These moments make us even stronger," the coach shared.
The team already has clearly defined roles during the 'asado': goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez assists the cooks, Lautaro Martínez takes care of the musical atmosphere, and Giuliano Simeone is the official taster. The process is coordinated by the team's official chef, Diego Yacovone.
For Argentines, the consumption of beef is part of the national cultural code, and asado is a symbol of home and unity that helps the footballers feel comfortable far from their homeland.
