Paolo Maldini and Leonardo resign from the Italian Football Federation

Paolo Maldini and his advisor Leonardo have resigned from their positions at the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) just days after their appointment, Sky Sport Italia reports. The decision comes amid serious disagreements regarding the selection process for the new head coach of the Italian national team.

Context of the appointments

The new technical director position was created by the federation's president, Giovanni Malagò. The goal of this new structure was to ensure greater autonomy for the national team and to unify youth formations and academies, aiming to build a new identity for Italian football. Maldini and Leonardo were officially appointed on July 11 following prolonged negotiations regarding the vision for transforming the system.

Reasons for the rift

The crisis in the federation was provoked by unsuccessful attempts to appoint a new head coach. The initial candidates – Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola – declined offers to lead the national team. The next candidate, Andrea Pirlo, was blocked after it became clear that he is a global ambassador for a Russian company.

According to the Sky Sport Italia source, tensions escalated after President Malagò blocked Pirlo's appointment, which goes against the wishes of Maldini and Leonardo.
