North Macedonia investigates 20 online platforms for hate speech against Bulgaria
An investigation has begun in North Macedonia against around 20 internet sites, pages, and profiles on social networks. The authors of the content are accused of organized dissemination of hate speech and incitement to tension regarding the relations between Skopje and Sofia.
Investigators from the Ministry of Interior and the National Security Agency (NSA) are focusing on materials related to the discussion about the inclusion of Bulgarians in the constitution, as well as provocative posts aimed at radicalizing public debate. Special attention is paid to the methods of financing these platforms.
Although the authorities have not revealed the specific names of the investigated sites, the focus on cyberspace indicates that the digital environment is perceived as a main channel for manipulating public opinion in the bilateral conflict. It is expected that the investigation will clarify whether this is a matter of isolated incidents or an organized campaign.
