Migration Pressure in Ceuta and Allegations of Disinformation

The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has accused international forces of an organized campaign to spread false information regarding the mass influx of migrants into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. According to Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares, the goal of these actions was to inflame the situation and undermine trust in the Schengen Area through the use of fabricated news.

The events in Ceuta caused discrepancies in official data regarding the number of border crossings and fatalities. According to the Moroccan Ministry of the Interior, approximately 40,000 people were detected, with 11 deaths. On the other hand, Spanish authorities report over 50,000 crossings and 70 victims. Morocco claims that the migration was driven by trafficking channels, while Spanish leaders and migrants, in interviews with media outlets such as "El País," raise questions about the role of Moroccan authorities in the process.

The Role of Social Media and Political Figures

The spread of information on social media, especially on TikTok and WhatsApp, plays a key role. According to sources, videos were circulated appealing to migrants that the border is "open," as well as practical advice for crossing the sea, including maps and equipment recommendations.

The situation took on political dimensions after footage of the events was shared by far-right representatives in Europe and the USA. US Vice President JD Vance shared a video that was accompanied by misinformation stating that the events are happening in "Northern Spain," even though Ceuta is not part of the Schengen Area. Simultaneously, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed out that a network of websites linked to the Kremlin was involved in spreading messages suggesting that Europe is being "taken over" by migrants.

Current State of the Border

At the moment, the situation in Ceuta is calmer, and the military presence has been reinforced. To prevent new sea arrivals, an inflatable barrier 500 meters long has been deployed. Although the local administration reports a normalization of life in the city, the leader of the enclave, Juan Jesús Vivas, claims that thousands of migrants are still in the area, accusing Madrid and Rabat of a lack of effective control.
