NASA and SpaceX Plan 4K Video Connection with the Moon via Starlink Network
NASA and SpaceX are preparing a revolutionary communication method that will change how deep space crews connect with Earth. As part of the upcoming Artemis III mission, the Orion spacecraft will be equipped with two miniature laser terminals that will allow it to use the Starlink infrastructure for data transmission.
The primary goal of this technological upgrade is to overcome the limitations of traditional radio channels. Through the laser link, Orion will be able to send 4K resolution video signals almost in real time. Instead of relying solely on a direct link to ground stations, the spacecraft will relay information to Starlink satellites in low Earth orbit, which will then direct it to ground centers via their inter-satellite laser network.
Currently, SpaceX operates a network of over 10,000 satellites that use thousands of laser links for data transfer. This massive infrastructure is becoming a critical asset not only for internet users but also for scientific missions. The technology has already been successfully demonstrated on a smaller scale, but Artemis III will be its most serious test to date, as it will support a manned mission aimed at returning humans to the Moon.
The Artemis III mission is planned for the second half of 2027 and will involve critical maneuvers between Orion and the lunar version of Starship. If successful, NASA plans to integrate this high-speed laser communication into subsequent stages of the program, including Artemis IV, scheduled for 2028.
