Greece to protect legendary Navagio Beach: large-scale shoreline expansion ahead
One of the most recognizable and photographed beaches in the world – Navagio on the Greek island of Zakynthos – is set to undergo a significant transformation. Greek authorities have announced a plan to expand the beach strip, aiming to protect the legendary shipwreck that serves as a symbol of the region.
The project involves adding 45,000 cubic meters of gravel, which will extend the beach by 30 meters towards the sea. Currently, the metal hull of the vessel is located about 25 meters from the waterline, but erosion poses a serious threat to it. Through this expansion, authorities hope to create a buffer zone that will distance the ship from the waves and allow for the subsequent restoration of the remains.
Despite the plans for improvement, access to the beach remains strictly limited. Due to the high risk of large-scale landslides, as determined by the Organization for Planning and Earthquake Protection (OASP), the area is closed to visitors. Safety concerns are justified by history – in 2018, a rockfall injured seven people, and the 2022 earthquake once again imposed bans.
According to current decisions, access for boats and swimmers will be prohibited until October 31, with restrictions expected to continue through the 2026 summer season. Tourists can enjoy the panorama of "Shipwreck Beach" only from above, as attempts to descend to the shore itself will be strictly punished.
Greek authorities will continue to review safety conditions twice a year to determine when and under what conditions access to this unique natural landmark will be restored.
