Five Decades of Archaeology in the Panagyurishte Region: Over 300 Sites Discovered

The Panagyurishte region is establishing itself as one of the most significant archaeological arenas in Bulgaria. In the current year of 2026, half a century is being celebrated since the beginning of systematic and organized archaeological studies in the Panagyurishte municipality area.

According to registered data, over 300 archaeological sites have been discovered within the municipality's territory. They cover a vast time range—from prehistory (6th millennium BCE) to the late Middle Ages (15th century). The finds include sites of national importance, such as fortresses, settlements, cult sites, necropolises, burial mounds, and ancient roads.

Organized activity in the region officially began in 1976. The occasion for the first large-scale excavations was the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the April Uprising. The primary scientific goal at that time was to prove the existence of advanced cultures in this region since deep antiquity.

Long-term research shows that the Sǎshtinska Sredna Gora region was home to exceptionally developed civilizations. Archaeologists emphasize that the collected information not only answers key questions about the past but also poses new scientific tasks. The continuation of these studies is critical for refining historical processes and understanding how people lived in this region throughout the centuries.
