The European Union has officially approved the acquisition of American video game developer and publisher Electronic Arts (EA) by the sovereign investment fund of Saudi Arabia. The European Commission's decision was made without additional conditions, as the regulator found no risks to market competition in the sector.

The deal is massive, valuing Electronic Arts at an impressive $55 billion. The acquisition was carried out through the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) in partnership with American investment entities Silver Lake and Affinity Partners, the latter being associated with Jared Kushner.

This move is part of a broader geopolitical and economic strategy for Saudi Arabia. Under the leadership of Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the kingdom is actively seeking to diversify its economy, which has until now been heavily dependent on the oil and gas sector, by directing massive capital toward tourism and the entertainment business.

Electronic Arts is one of the industry leaders with a portfolio including global hits such as the EA Sports FC series (formerly the well-known FIFA), Madden, NHL, UFC, and its popular simulation series The Sims. The California-based company is a key player in the global digital entertainment content market.
