U.S. President Donald Trump criticized major oil companies, accusing them of generating unfairly high profits as a result of the crude oil shortage caused by the military conflict in Iran. During a conversation with reporters at the White House, the American leader expressed dissatisfaction with the current market situation.

Pressure on corporations and Chevron

"I don't like it. They are making too much money, don't you agree? Because of the shortage, they are making too much money," Trump said, as quoted by AFP and BTA. In addition to conversations with journalists, the president made similar statements on the social network Truth Social, where he directly called on the industry to lower gasoline prices for American consumers.

As part of his criticism, Trump also targeted Chevron CEO Mike Wirth. He accused the executive of failing to acknowledge the White House's efforts to support the oil industry, including by ensuring access to the Venezuelan market, during a television interview.

Geopolitical context and market risks

Regional tensions have escalated following Iranian attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz, which has affected global energy resource trade. Despite international pressure, Iran continues to carry out missile and drone attacks against American and allied targets, while simultaneously maintaining its stockpiles of enriched uranium.

According to an analysis by Reuters, high fuel prices and rising costs of essential goods represent a significant political risk for the Republican Party. The upcoming midterm elections in November could lead to a loss of the majority in the House of Representatives and control over the Senate if economic discontent among citizens continues.
