At Khamenei's Funeral: Iran Sent Diplomatic Messages Through Selection of Quranic Verses

During the ceremonies for the funeral of the late Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, Iranian diplomacy used religious text as a tool to convey political messages to delegations from various countries. Despite the lack of official confirmation, analysts and media interpret the selection of specific verses as a direct response to the geopolitical positions of the attending countries.

The only Bulgarian representatives at the funeral – deputy Angel Georgiev and Zlatan Zlatanov from the 'Revival' party – received a specific message. The part of the Quran recited during their homage warned not to submit to "hypocrites" and not to pay attention to their slander. The interpretation is that Iran is directing this text towards Bulgaria's Western allies, accusing them of hypocrisy in the context of sanctions and regional policy.

Messages to other delegations were also encoded in religious terms. For the Saudi delegation, a verse about the Battle of Badr was recited, which is interpreted as a hint at Saudi support for American military operations. For Turkey, the choice of text emphasizes the difference between fighters and those who stand back, which can be linked to Ankara's cautious position in regional conflicts.

More moderate messages focused on spiritual values and peace, without direct military undertones, were sent to delegations from Russia, China, and India. At the same time, calls for sacrifice and victory were sent to pro-Iranian groups such as Hezbollah and Hamas.

This diplomatic move sparked debates even in Iran. Regime supporters believe this is a strategic reminder of responsibility, while critics describe it as an expression of hatred and diplomatic foolishness. For Bulgaria and the region, this is news that highlights how religious institutions continue to play the role of active geopolitical players, even in a moment of mourning.
