Trump supports radical package of sanctions against Russia through high tariffs

US President Donald Trump has shifted his position and announced support for a massive bill providing for strict economic sanctions against Russia. The initiative, developed by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, aims to isolate the Russian energy sector by applying 500 percent tariffs on imports from countries that continue to buy Russian oil, natural gas, and uranium.

This shift in the White House approach is significant, as Trump had previously expressed skepticism, insisting on maintaining broader operational powers when imposing sanctions. The support comes during a period of political sensitivity, following the sudden death of Senator Graham, who was a primary driver of this legislative package.

The bill is bipartisan, with Democrat Richard Blumenthal also serving as a co-author. This cooperation is key to its passage through the Senate, where the consent of the two main political forces is required. Senate Republican Leader John Thune confirmed that the administration worked closely with Graham on the document.
