The Nature Effect: Just Five Minutes Outdoors Can Transform Your Mood
Even the busiest schedule is not an obstacle to improving your mental state. According to large-scale scientific studies, short five-minute periods spent moving outdoors are completely sufficient for a significant boost in emotional tone and well-being.
Data analyzed from various studies show that although longer walks are beneficial, it is precisely the "micro-doses" of nature that have the most intense effect on the human psyche. Interestingly, this phenomenon has been observed in ten separate experiments involving over 1,200 participants, where the majority reported a real improvement in their overall mood immediately following short activity.
A current systematic review of data from 2025 confirms these findings. Research on nearly a thousand participants shows that physical activity lasting less than 20 minutes is extremely effective for maintaining mental health. Particularly positive results are observed among younger people, as well as those who have already gone through periods of emotional difficulty.
Where is the best place to walk?
Although every natural environment brings benefits, scientists note that locations near water provide a slightly higher improvement in well-being. Nevertheless, the difference between the coastline and ordinary green spaces is minimal, suggesting that any park or forest is a suitable place for "nature therapy."
Despite the categorical results, specialists are still investigating whether the main factor is indeed contact with nature or simply the fact that outdoor movement is different from indoor workouts. While science seeks final answers, a small change in daily routine – a five-minute walk – seems to be the easiest path to better well-being.
