The Climate "Tax" in Italy: Extreme Heat Costs the Economy Billions

Extreme temperature anomalies are becoming a serious economic factor in Italy, acting as a sort of "climate tax" on businesses and the state budget. According to a new study by the economic office of the Italian Confederation of Business, Tourism, and Service Owners (Confesercenti), heatwaves have a direct and negative impact on the national economy.

Data shows that periods of 30 to 60 days of intense heat annually can cost Italy between 6 and 12 billion euros. This represents approximately 0.4% of the country's gross domestic product (GDP). The main reasons for this economic pressure are the sharp increase in energy costs, a decline in labor productivity, mandatory investments in adaptation, and loss of revenue in key sectors such as tourism.

Niko Gronchi, president of Confesercenti, emphasizes that these climate changes are already a permanent factor that is changing consumer habits and the investment climate. According to him, if immediate structural measures and serious investments in urban sustainability and adaptation to the new climate reality are not taken, the country's competitiveness will continue to weaken, and the economic pressure on society will deepen.
