Space Mystery: The Sun Contains 55% More Silver Than Previously Thought

A new study, published in the prestigious journal "Astronomy & Astrophysics," is changing our understanding of the chemical composition of our Sun. Scientists from Uppsala University in Sweden have found that the amount of silver in the solar atmosphere is 55 percent greater than previous estimates.

This discovery is crucial as it solves the long-standing scientific problem of the so-called "missing silver" in the Solar System. Until now, there was a serious discrepancy between the amount of silver measured in the Sun and that found in primitive meteorites. Since both formed from the same cloud of gas and dust about 4.6 billion years ago, their chemical compositions should have been similar.

"With our new model, we were able to more accurately interpret the spectral lines used to determine the presence of silver in the Sun," explains Sema Kaliskan, lead researcher on the project.

The method used in the study relies on precision spectroscopy. By analyzing sunlight, scientists trace specific "spectral lines" – unique "fingerprints" that every chemical element leaves in the spectrum. Previous models had been too simplified, whereas the new, more realistic model of the solar atmosphere allowed for much more accurate calculations.

In addition to refining the composition of the Sun, the results provide valuable information about the chemical evolution of the Milky Way. They help astronomers better understand how heavy elements are formed in stars and stellar explosions and how they are distributed throughout the Universe over time.
