Scientific Recognition for Dr. Veselina Uzunova: Associate Professor at the Institute for Historical Studies of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences

The Scientific Council of the Institute for Historical Studies of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) has officially confirmed Dr. Veselina Uzunova as an Associate Professor. This is recognition of her long-term work in the field of regional history and the study of social and institutional processes in the Haskovo region.

The associate professorship was defended with the habilitation work "In Service of Life: Healthcare in Haskovo and the Region, 1878–1903". In it, the author examines critically important aspects of the past, including the strategic role of the quarantine service in the village of Hebibchevo (now Lyubimets), which protected the Principality from pandemics such as cholera and the bubonic plague during the transitional period between the 19th and 20th centuries.

Dr. Uzunova is the author of a series of significant monographs that examine different layers of the region's history:

• – regarding the economic modernization of the area;
• – regarding the political governance of the city from the National Revival to the socialist period;
• – regarding personal fates during the dramatic years of the 20th century;
• – a biographical study of the first global pop idol born in Haskovo.

In her statement, Dr. Uzunova emphasized that this recognition is the fruit of years of work dedicated to the people, institutions, and memory of the Haskovo region, which are waiting to be told.
