Prosecution Scandal: Stoyan Mavrodiiev Released Immediately Following His Extradition
The Bulgarian prosecution is facing sharp criticism following its decision to release Stoyan Mavrodiiev immediately after his extradition from Serbia. According to available information, the state prosecution did not utilize the legally provided 72-hour window to assess whether to request permanent arrest.
Mavrodiiev, who has a political background and is linked to financial activities, was arrested in Serbia weeks ago. Despite being accused of serious financial crimes, the prosecution decided on his release, arguing a lack of danger of committing a crime and a "reduced intensity of the risk of concealment."
Criticism of the institution is that such rapid decisions demonstrate privileged treatment toward certain figures in the country. Although the Prosecutor's Office points to the collected evidence and the defendant's health condition as motives for the measure, questions regarding the transparency of the process and potential links between the "quasi-elite" and law enforcement agencies remain open.
The case is sparking serious debates regarding whether justice in Bulgaria is applied equally to all citizens or if there exists a "special class" that receives faster and easier service from state institutions.
