The condition of the nails is often viewed as a "mirror" of the body's overall health status. Changes in their structure, color, or shape can be early indicators of hidden micronutrient deficiencies or progressive diseases that require immediate medical intervention.

Color Changes: What Do They Tell Us?

Different shades of the nails can guide doctors toward specific problems:

  • Pale or white nails (leukonychia): These can be a sign of anemia (iron deficiency) or heart failure. In some cases, when the nails are completely white with a dark edge, this may point to liver problems such as hepatitis or cirrhosis.
  • Yellow nails: The most common cause is a fungal infection, but in more serious cases, the yellow color may be linked to chronic bronchitis or psoriasis.
  • Dark vertical lines: The appearance of black or brown bands under the nail requires urgent consultation with a dermatologist, as it could be a sign of melanoma – a dangerous type of skin cancer.

Texture and Relief: Structural Signals

Changes in the nail surface also carry important information:

  • Vertical ridges: Usually associated with the natural aging of the body.
  • Horizontal lines (Beau's lines): These indentations indicate that nail growth was interrupted by severe physiological stress – for example, a severe infection (flu, pneumonia, Covid-19), surgery, or uncontrolled diabetes.
  • Pitting: Small indentations, resembling pinholes, are often an early sign of psoriasis or autoimmune conditions such as alopecia areata.

Changes in Shape

The shape of the nails can reveal problems with internal organs. Brittle and peeling nails are often due to external chemicals, but they can also signal hypothyroidism (thyroid gland problems).

The most serious sign is so-called . In this condition, the tips of the fingers expand, and the nails curve sharply downward. This is a classic symptom of chronically low blood oxygen levels and is often associated with lung diseases (COPD, lung cancer) or cardiovascular problems.
