Russia, the world's largest wheat producer, is facing a paradoxical situation: a good grain yield is turning into an economic burden for farmers due to logistical and energy obstacles. The combination of domestic fuel shortages and the escalation of military actions in the Black Sea region calls into question the stability of global food markets.

Diesel Crisis and Production Costs

Prolonged drone attacks against Russian oil refineries have caused a serious diesel shortage. For the agricultural sector, this means not only a sharp rise in prices but also operational difficulties – farmers report long queues and difficult access to the resource needed for agricultural machinery. These costs eat into profit margins, turning some productions into deficit or even loss-making ventures.

Blockade of Transport Arteries

The second major factor is the transformation of the Sea of Azov into an active military zone. Conflicts between Russian and Ukrainian ships have limited shipping and reduced the number of buyers offering export bids. Due to high delivery costs and low purchase prices, local producers from regions such as the Rostov region report losses of about 25 dollars per metric ton of grain.

What Does This Mean for the World and Bulgaria?

Analysts warn that if the situation in the Sea of Azov does not stabilize, Russia may fail to export between 5 and 10 million tons of wheat this year. By comparison, last year's exports exceeded 46 million tons.

For the average consumer: Even if Russia has enough grain, its ability to reach global markets is compromised. Such a drop in supply on the world stage usually leads to volatility and price increases for basic food products, which is felt directly in the consumer basket in Bulgaria and around the world.
