Bulgarian tennis is experiencing a pivotal moment with an official change in the leadership position. Following the success of 19-year-old Plovdiv native Elizara Yaneva in the qualifying rounds for the Wimbledon major tournament, she will become Bulgaria's number one player.

Yaneva managed to reach the second qualifying round of the prestigious competition, which will lead to a jump of 9 positions in the world rankings. With this success, she will reach a record high of 194th place.

This event marks the end of Viktoria Tomova's seven-year dominance in Bulgarian tennis. After Tomova's elimination at the very start of the London qualifiers, she loses 30 positions and will occupy the 204th spot in the rankings. For the first time since 2019, Tomova will fall out of the world tennis top 200.

Notably, the last female tennis player to hold the status of Bulgaria's number one for an extended period was Tsvetana Pironkova. She held this status for 11 years, reaching as high as 31st in the world.
