Experts reassure Bulgarians regarding the appearance of a large locust species in the country

In connection with frequent reports of large locusts appearing in various parts of Bulgaria, the Food Chain Risk Assessment Center (FCRAC) has provided important clarifications. According to specialists, the observed species is the white-fronted Decticus (D. albifrons), which does not pose a threat to human health or pets.

The white-fronted Decticus is one of the largest representatives of tree locusts in Southern Europe, with its length reaching between 32 and 40 mm. Despite its impressive size, it is not poisonous and is not a carrier of diseases. Its appearance in populated areas is a seasonal phenomenon related to the life cycle of adult individuals, which are active from June to October.

Ecological role and agriculture
Unlike some other species, the white-fronted Decticus is primarily predatory. It feeds on small insects such as crickets, caterpillars, flies, and butterflies, which can actually be beneficial to the ecosystem. Due to its mixed diet, it is not considered an economically significant pest and does not pose a danger to vineyards, orchards, or vegetable crops.

How to react?
Experts emphasize that the presence of these insects does not require mass disinsection or other plant protection measures. The specialists' advice to citizens is not to destroy the insects. If a locust enters your home or terrace, it is best to carry it outside using a container, without touching it directly with your hands.
