The European Parliament has officially supported the commencement of negotiations for the creation of a digital euro. This decision is a key step in the European Union's ambition to introduce a virtual version of its currency, which would ensure greater financial sovereignty for the bloc.

The main strategic goal of the EU is for the digital euro to offer a real alternative to dominant American payment systems like Visa and Mastercard, as well as services such as Apple Pay and Google Pay. Although the project has been under development for years, the focus is now shifting toward building the necessary legal framework.

According to the timeline suggested by the institutions, negotiators from the Parliament and the governments of the member states must reach an agreement by the end of 2026. If the process proceeds without significant delays, the European Central Bank plans for the digital euro to be available to EU citizens by 2029. The first official meeting of the negotiators is expected to take place as early as this month.

In the event of a successfully reached agreement by the end of the current year, the launch of a pilot program to test the practical functioning of the new currency is planned for mid-2027.

In the context of privacy concerns, MEP Fernando Navarrete Rojas, one of the leading negotiators, emphasized that the digital euro is an "alternative, not an obligation." He categorically rejected theories that the new currency would be a tool for state control, assuring that the highest standards for protecting users' personal data will be guaranteed.
