Europe Opens Android to Competitive Artificial Intelligence: A Solution Against Google's Monopoly

The European Commission has taken a decisive step to overhaul the artificial intelligence market by imposing an obligation on Google to open its Android ecosystem to competing AI services. The decision, taken under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), aims to prevent the dominance of tech giants and create a level playing field for developers of new AI assistants.

According to the regulator, previous restrictions on access to key Android features placed third-party applications at a disadvantage compared to Google's built-in AI assistant, Gemini. Under the new rules, competing AI models will be able to be activated via voice commands (similar to "Hey Google") and perform complex tasks, such as booking taxis or other system operations.

In addition to software access, Google will be required to share data from its search engine with alternative search engines and AI chatbots that offer search functionalities. The Commission emphasized that this is crucial for innovation, given that 60% of mobile device users in the EU use Android.

Google reacted sharply to the decision, stating that the changes could undermine the data privacy and security of millions of Europeans. The company claims it has offered alternative data anonymization methods, which were nevertheless rejected by Brussels. In response to the regulation, Google emphasized that the primary responsibility for user security should lie with phone manufacturers.

The decision is already having a "domino effect" in the sector – Apple has already announced that due to similar regulatory pressures in the EU, its new AI assistant Siri will not be available to European users in the next major iOS and iPadOS updates.

According to the schedule, the imposed decision requires Google to begin sharing data with other search engines from January 2027, while the full integration of competing AI services into Android must be implemented by July 2027.
