Europe Bets on Space Defense: Consortium Created to Develop Anti-Missile Interceptors

The European defense sector is undertaking a massive technological leap aimed at achieving strategic independence in airspace protection. A group of leading missile and high-tech system manufacturers has announced the creation of the Bliksem EXO consortium, which will focus on developing the first European anti-missile interceptor operating in space.

According to Reuters, key players including France's Thales, Airbus, and Safran, Germany's MBDA division, as well as the aerospace startup Destinus, have joined the initiative. The partnership was officially confirmed through the signing of a letter of intent in Paris.

The main goal of the project is to create a system capable of intercepting and destroying medium- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles. The critical interception point is planned to be during the mid-course phase of the missiles' flight, while they are still moving outside the Earth's atmosphere. This stage is considered one of the most difficult to implement, as it requires precision navigation and speed in space conditions before the warhead begins its reentry into the atmosphere.

The Bliksem EXO initiative is a direct response to changes in the European security architecture following the Russian aggression against Ukraine. Currently, European nations are striving to fill critical gaps in their anti-missile capabilities to reduce dependence on technologies developed outside the continent. Creating their own exoatmospheric defense is key to countering modern missile threats, which are becoming increasingly complex and large-scale.
