The European new car market is showing signs of a steady recovery. According to Dataforce data, new vehicle registrations increased by 13% in June, reaching 1.38 million units. However, the most notable change is observed in the electric mobility sector, where sales jumped by an impressive 52% compared to the same period last year.

Key drivers of this growth are models such as the Tesla Model Y and Model 3, but the market is rapidly diversifying with new offerings. Success is being seen in both more affordable models, like the Renault 5 E-Tech, and premium variants such as the BMW iX3 and Skoda Enyaq. The expanding network of charging stations and various government policies – for example, higher taxes on internal combustion engine vehicles in France – are further stimulating the transition.

Geopolitics and Fuel Prices

One of the key factors driving consumers toward electric vehicles is the instability of energy markets. Tensions in the Middle East and supply disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz have led to a jump in gasoline and diesel prices by about 20%. This makes electric mobility and hybrid technologies much more attractive from an economic perspective.

Chinese Expansion and Changes in Market Shares

Chinese manufacturers are no longer just players; they are becoming a dominant force. Brands such as BYD, Chery, Geely, and SAIC Motor already control a significant share of the European market, with their total sales exceeding 110,000 units. Rapid growth is also being reported by smaller brands like Leapmotor and Zeekr.

On the other hand, traditional European and Japanese manufacturers are losing ground. Notable declines in market share were recorded by Ford (-7.9%), Land Rover and DS (-11%), as well as Alfa Romeo (-19%). A negative trend is also observed with Nissan and Mitsubishi. Nevertheless, companies like BMW and Toyota are managing to maintain growth by adapting to new market realities.
