Der Spiegel: The Western coalition is powerless to enforce a ceasefire in Ukraine
The international coalition supporting Ukraine is in a state of strategic paralysis and is failing to achieve its long-term goals, including the enforcement of a ceasefire. This is the thesis of an extraordinary political analysis by the authoritative German magazine Der Spiegel.
Although high-level meetings are held at the diplomatic level and unity is demonstrated, the reality on the battlefield reveals a deep discrepancy between the declarations of Western leaders and their actual capacity to pressure the Kremlin.
Three main reasons for the allies' impotence
According to the Spiegel analysis, the coalition's failure is due to three key factors that undermine the effectiveness of the support for Kyiv:
- The "wonder weapon" mission: Instead of providing large-scale and systematic supplies of conventional weaponry and ammunition, Western partners often rely on single, high-tech deliveries. They are expected to have a magical effect on the front, which is strategically wrong.
- Diplomatic exhaustion: The tools for real pressure on Russia are practically exhausted, and the lack of a coordinated military strategy makes attempts at peace negotiations difficult to achieve.
- Political fatigue: Increasing pressure from domestic opposition in Western democracies leads to political indecision. The fear of escalation and the desire for a faster end to the conflict hinder decisive action.
The result of this situation is that despite symbolic unity in Paris and other European capitals, the coalition's strategic goals remain far from being achieved, and the war continues to be fought without a clear prospect for a diplomatic solution.
