Complex Liver Transplantation at VMA: 42-Year-Old Man Receives New Chance at Life

The Military Medical Academy (VMA) has announced the success of one of its latest complex liver transplantations. During the intervention, which lasted over seven hours, a 42-year-old man whose condition was critical but has since been stabilized, was saved.

The operation was carried out on July 22 and is the result of a donor situation at UMBAL "Tsaritsa Ioanna - ISUL". The donor was a 36-year-old woman. Due to the recipient's severe condition and the high technical complexity of the procedure, the medical team spent significantly more time in the operating room than usual.

Dozens of specialists participated in the successful conduct of the intervention. The transplantation team was led by Prof. Ivelin Takorov, and the organ explantation was performed under the guidance of Dr. Ivan Ivanov. The anesthesiology group, led by Dr. Edlir Gruda, played a special role in the process, as their precise work was key to stabilizing the patient.

"The patient is in a stabilized severe condition, conscious and adequate. He requires careful monitoring in the postoperative period," shared Prof. Takorov.

Following the surgery, care for the recipient will be taken over by the team from the Clinic of Gastroenterology under the leadership of Assoc. Prof. Marina Konakchieva. Specialists emphasize that the period of recovery and adaptation to the new organ is critically important for long-term success.

The leadership of VMA expressed deep gratitude to the donor's family for the humanity shown in a moment of personal tragedy, as well as to the coordinators and medical staff who ensured the smooth running of the process. VMA has long been a leading center for liver transplantations in the country, possessing over two decades of experience in this field.
