Cinema Under the Stars in Varna: 12th Edition of 'Karantinata' Festival Presents 44 Films from 19 Countries
Varna will once again become a center for international short cinema. From August 4 to 8, 2026, the 12th edition of the namesake film festival will be held on the Asparuhovo beach, right next to the 'Karantinata' fishing village.
This year's program is exceptionally rich, including 44 titles produced in 19 countries. The selection covers various genres – from narrative and documentary cinema to animation, experimental projects, and video art. Viewers will have the opportunity to watch films that have already gained recognition at prestigious platforms such as Venice, Berlinale, Toronto, and Sundance.
Highlights include Bulgarian premieres presenting works from South Africa, Canada, Australia, Mexico, and traditionally strong cinematic schools from France, Italy, and Spain, as well as several Bulgarian productions. All films will have Bulgarian subtitles and will also be adapted for an English-speaking audience.
The festival is not just cinema, but also a musical experience. Every evening from 21:00, the screenings will be accompanied by live original music. Various jazz and funk ensembles, including quintets and octets, will participate in the program, creating a special atmosphere in front of the screens.
Important information for visitors:
- Admission: Free for all screenings and events.
- Transport: Free organized transport is available from the center of Varna (Antim I St., in front of the Archaeological Museum). Departure is between 18:30 and 20:00, and the return from 'Karantinata' is between 22:45 and 23:30.
The 'Karantinata' festival continues to establish itself as a platform for young authors and socially engaged art, while simultaneously maintaining an independent spirit, far from commercial branding and commercial presence.
