Bulgarian Folklore Conquers Europe: Double Triumph for 'SOFIA-6' Ensemble in Budapest and Pristina

Bulgarian folklore has once again proven that its rhythm and energy know no borders. Within just a few weeks, the folklore dance ensemble 'SOFIA-6' turned European stages into its personal triumph, winning prestigious awards both in Hungary and Kosovo.

The first wave of recognition came from the Hungarian capital, Budapest. At the 31st edition of the international competition Duna Karnevál, 'SOFIA-6' made history by becoming the first Bulgarian group to earn both First Prize and the Audience Award. This success is no coincidence—it is the result of accumulated experience and the recognition the ensemble has already earned at the national level.

However, the euphoria did not stop at Hungary's borders. Days later, the ensemble represented Bulgaria at the international dance art festival 'Newborn Kosova 2026' in Pristina. There, the Bulgarian performances became one of the most impactful highlights of the program, winning First Prize and receiving warm applause from the international audience and the diplomatic corps.

"You are the pride of the homeland and true ambassadors of millennial Bulgarian culture," congratulated the participants, Ambassador Hristo Kraevski, emphasizing the weight of this cultural representation.

What makes the success of 'SOFIA-6' even more impressive is the fact that behind these titles stand people who are not professional artists by trade. The dancers are pupils, students, and working people who pour their hearts into the rehearsal hall to preserve living tradition. Under the leadership of artistic director Nikolay Nestor, who has dedicated himself to the ensemble over the last three decades, the group now carries 13 world titles.

Following these two brilliant successes, 'SOFIA-6' faces a new, even more massive challenge. The ensemble will be the sole Bulgarian representative at the FIDAF Brazil World Championship, where it will fight for global recognition on one of the largest stages in the world.
