Bulgarian experts working on new standards for liver cancer treatment

The Bulgarian medical elite is beginning work on updating the treatment protocols for liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma). Within the framework of the "MORE" project, an expert board consisting of 42 specialists will develop new clinical recommendations and educational materials to serve as a guide for doctors in the country.

The working event will be held on July 24 and 25, 2026, in Sofia. The multidisciplinary team includes representatives from leading medical institutions – from the Military Medical Academy and University Hospital "Alexandrovska" to university hospitals in Pleven, Varna, Plovdiv, and Stara Zagora. The participation of such a wide range of specialists – from gastroenterologists and surgeons to nutritionists and pharmacologists – ensures a holistic approach to the disease.

The new guidelines will be officially presented in October 2026 during the 17th National Oncology Conference "MORE". It is important to note that the experts are using the internationally recognized GRADE method for assessing scientific evidence, which ensures maximum objectivity and transparency of the recommendations.

The "MORE" project (Multidisciplinary Oncology Discussions and Extracts) is a long-standing initiative that has been successfully creating clinical guidelines for various types of malignant tumors since 2010. It is part of the broader activities of the Joint National Oncology Network (JNON), which unites medical organizations in Bulgaria with the aim of improving the fight against cancer in accordance with European standards.
