Austria Implements New Media Funding Model: Focus on Independence and Digitalization

The Austrian government has reached an agreement on a new package of media subsidies aimed at stabilizing the media market and supporting quality journalism. According to Vice Chancellor and Minister of Media Andreas Babler, the new strategy rejects the "uncontrolled distribution" of state advertising funds in favor of more targeted support for independent media.

The new financial plan is based on three main pillars:

• Support for the print press: 22.5 million euros will be directed toward newspaper distribution costs to ensure access to information regardless of regional location.
• Digital transformation: The budget for the digitalization fund will be increased to 22.5 million euros annually over the next two years to help media outlets adapt to new technologies.
• Media literacy: 10 million euros are allocated for educational projects, with 7 million of those going toward initiatives specifically targeting a young audience.

To receive funding, media outlets will have to prove their editorial independence, adherence to ethical standards, and work in the public interest. Beneficiaries may include both established media corporations and new startups in the sector.
