Architecture as a Living Language: 'Project Kino Cosmos' at the Nenko Balkanski House-Museum

What happens to concrete and glass masses when political eras pass? Are they merely monuments of the past, or do they continue to breathe in the rhythm of the modern city? These questions are at the heart of 'Project Kino Cosmos' – the new solo exhibition by Vasilena Gankovska, which will open at the Nenko Balkanski House-Museum in Kazanlak.

Under the curation of Boris Kostadinov, the project is not just a retrospection of architectural forms, but a deep visual analysis of late-modernist socialist architecture. Gankovska chooses two emblematic sites – the 'Kosmos' cinemas in Berlin and Plovdiv. They are presented not as static artifacts, but as living spaces that carry their codes and meanings through the decades.

Through a rich multidisciplinary palette – from photography and painting to ceramics and graphic prints – the artist traces how architectural language transforms under the pressure of social and political changes. She turns the heavy forms of the past into an active participant in our present, exploring how the visual symbols of an era continue to shape the urban environment today.

The exhibition is the result of a partnership with the Singer-Zaharieff Foundation and the National Gallery. It will be available to visitors from July 24 to October 11, 2026.
