An Investment in History: Botevgrad Municipality to Fund Excavations of the 'Bozenishki Urvich' Fortress

Archaeological research of one of the most significant historical fortresses in the Botevgrad region – 'Bozenishki Urvich' – will receive support from the local authorities. Botevgrad Municipality plans to provide the necessary funds to conduct field activities in the Gradishteto area, near the village of Bozhenitsa.

The Mayor of the municipality, Ivan Gavalyugov, has submitted a proposal to the Municipal Council to allocate 14,650 euros from the municipality's own revenues. The funds are intended for the implementation of the archaeological season in 2026. The initiative comes in response to a request from the director of the Historical Museum – Botevgrad, who emphasizes the critical importance of the site to the region's cultural heritage.

The main motive for the advance budget planning is the need for security in project execution. Due to the current lack of an approved state and municipal budget, the mayor proposes that the decision be adopted in advance to avoid delays that would interrupt the archaeologists' work cycle.

The 'Bozenishki Urvich' fortress is a key site whose excavations in recent years have revealed valuable layers of Bulgaria's ancient and medieval history. In addition to its scientific value, the research of the fortress has the potential to significantly develop cultural tourism in the Botevgrad region.
